Dental Hygiene Therapy (Dental Cleanings)
Dental hygiene therapy is important to help patients maintain good oral and overall health. Professional cleanings by a registered dental hygienist remove plaque and calculus (tartar) that may develop even with good homecare, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. It is recommended that you come in for a check up and cleaning once every six months.
What to Expect
You can expect your dental cleaning to last between 30 minutes to an hour. A hygienist will do the cleaning and a dentist may or may not come in for an exam during your appointment. Most people find that they may have slight discomfort during and/or after their appointment.
Dental cleanings can involve many steps to complete the process. During your appointment, the hygienist will polish your teeth to remove plaque and debris. The hygienist will then scale your teeth by hand and/or by use of an ultrasonic scaler, depending on each patient's individual needs.
